Today, ten years after its conception, Wakestock stands as the biggest event of its kind in the world. Packed full of wakeboarding, skating, motor cross, and music of all genres, this year’s Wakestock was by far, one of the greatest family events of the summer. Whether, chillin and drinking to some good tunes is your thing, or checking out all the latest border tricks, Wakestock had something for everyone.
The Toronto Island festival featured four days of athletic competitions and three days of music from a variety of up and coming Canadian artists including Protest the Hero, I Hate Sally, and Ill Scarlett. There were also a bunch of non-Canadian acts including hip hop legends, De La Soul, Goldfinger, and the Deftones.
Goldfinger’s performance was a personal favourite, and it will probably be the last time they will ever be invited to play Wakestock again. Like his usual self, front man John Feldman had the crowd roaring and chanting, only this time, it led to conflicts with the stage crew. Just as he does at every performance, he invited fans up and onto the stage only to get booted off by security guards shortly after. This led to a unanimous chant of “Fuck you†from the band and audience, which had parents and promoters in a frenzy and the crowd in hysterics.
I’d definitely recommend Wakestock to anyone next year – whether you like hip hop, rock, or just dig the sports, be sure to check it out and don’t forget to bring ear muffs for the kiddies just in case Goldfinger decides to make another appearance.
