Set Your Pace

If you’re an independent artist debating whether or not to sign to a label, I’d like to introduce you to Marco Difelice, former front man of Super Garage and now the solo looping artist Marco Solo. The man has toured the UK, U.S and Canada with rock band Super Garage, composed scores for film as Marco Difelice, managed other artists such as Emilie Mover, collaborated with the likes of Neverending White Lights (the first featured singer of Act 1 – “A Little Piece”, available on Marco’s MySpace) and created his very own one man show as Marco Solo.

One of the biggest points he made about his career, is that not having signed to a label with Super Garage, made him network himself through all facets of the music industry which follows him even after the band’s career is over. Not to say it’s all said and done, you might hear their music on Degrassi. The contacts made during his time with the band, helped him establish his solo career. Had the band signed to a label, he’d have to network his way in from the ground up.

More importantly, not signing to a label gives him complete control over when, where, what and how he plays, records, or tours. He has no one to answer to which gives him the freedom to pull out any time he wants and not risk a lawsuit by doing so.

During the video interview, Marco mentions that there is a music video for “Your Ghost” on YouTube which was produced by a group of animators from Montreal, Quebec. It’s quite magical, kind of a tripped out “Alice in Wonder Land” picture.

Speaking of women, I’ve just looked up Emilie Mover’s MySpace page and found a great Telus Commercial with her song “No Hill Too High”. I wonder if she’ll be the next Feist. Kudos to Marco for hooking up the commercial. Check it out, she’s got a great voice and catchy music.

The video production for the above was troublesome having very low light in the venue; Tranzac. Having never been there before, I booked myself a blind date. I normally wouldn’t film in this type of venue, but there is something about it that feels right at home.

In turn, I’ve hopefully compensated for the poor lighting by converting the footage into black and white picture, then tweaking the gamma settings and adding a little bit of sharpening for a grain affect. Now we can call it artsy! Let that be another lesson with this post for you cinematographers when gasping at your footage in post-production.
