Get Noticed

The Human Statues were originally formed in Vancouver as street performers performing mime. They have now relocated to Toronto, Ontario, Canada and not only perform mime, but are also musicians/comedians. They’ve often been compared to Jackson 5 and the Beatles. Personally, they remind me of the Roxbury brothers (Steve and Doug Butabi) from the movie “Night at the Roxbury”… I also hear a little bit of “Flight of the Conchords” in their sound too.

What I really want to do here though is highlight their innovative tactics to getting noticed. I say they make more noise while dressed as statues than when playing their instruments, despite the silence of their mime. When asked why they dress up as statues they say it’s a marketing tactic to get noticed. I’ve seen them perform three crafts; busking street corners luring startled pedestrians into their show, posing as statues in full costume surprising conference delegates with flyers, and performing on stage as a full band.

The venue was loaded and the crowd was participating, laughing at their antics and dancing along to their jubilation, a modern day  “Elvis pelvis” dance coined as – spreading jubilation across the nation. My favorite part of their set was a song called “Avec Moi”, an English song with a French hook, from their self-titled album… a second indie release in their 2 years as The Human Statues.

I recommend this album to anyone who is a fan of The Beatles, The Beach Boys, or Buddy Holly. I would describe their album Thrilling funky folk pop with a British twist. If the interviews, busking and live band don’t have you sold on buying their album, I encourage you to preview the individual tracks of this album at CD Baby.
