On Sunday June 21st, 2009 20 local producers from Toronto went head to head in an elimination style Beat Battle tournament as part of The Academy’s 4 days of programming during NXNE 2009 Festival. The excitement levels blasted through the roof as contenders knocked each other out of the ring, fighting for a $500 grand prize. BEAT LOUNGE resident producer Rich Kidd, and Big Pops, also a BEAT LOUNGE participant battled it out for the championship. Rich Kidd took home the prize, not only finishing there, but insisting on sharing 50% of his winnings with his local comrade. Everybody got a chance to shine, everybody won.

BEAT LOUNGE is a monthly hip hop producer showcase hosted by Unknown Funk Hero currently held at The Silver Dollar Room in downtown Toronto. The BEAT LOUNGE stage has hosted a vast array of Canadian talent including Slakah The Beatchild, Marco Polo, Circle Research, Mantis among others. Starting in November of 2008, the event hit the ground running, immediately receiving great reviews in local publications and accolades from the local hip-hop community.

The event continues to be a growing success, establishing a strong network of hip-hop producers, artists, DJs and spectators. This has been marked by the partnership of an established promotion team The Academy in 2009′s NXNE Festival. Organizers approached Unknown Funk Hero’s group of promoters to collaborate on what was an epic part of Toronto’s hip-hop history, the first ever NXNE Beat Battle.
