Toronto Freedom Festival

Toronto Freedom Festival - May 1st 2010

The Toronto Freedom Festival is a political movement protesting the laws that ban marijuana. It is widely believed that marijuana can serve as medicine or even a better alternative to other recreational drugs such as cigarettes or alcohol. Too many individuals have been slapped with criminal charges for growing, distributing or even possessing any hemp.

There are nations around the world which have legalized marijuana and in turn boosted their economy by lowering the unemployment rate or even saved on resources such as paper and glue made out of hemp rather than trees or cows.

A marijuana tree is one of the fastest growing trees in the world and you can make all sorts of things from it as hemp. In fact, in the same year, you could plant and harvest enough marijuana trees to launch a  paper mill.

This movement could very well save the planet from more factory pollution.

To raise awareness and support for these hidden facts, the Toronto Freedom Festival organizes an annual bash at Queen’s Park with live bands, guest speakers, hundreds of merchants and more than 30,000 supporters enjoying the festivities.

While attending the festival, I had only one complaint… there was no schedule… no schedule available on their official website, no schedule posted on a banner at the event, no schedule on any poster, facebook page or anywhere…. I Googled for it, I even tried Yahoo and nothing.

Nonetheless, the Freedom Festival is a terrific opportunity for an artist to get on radar. With over 30,000 supporters in attendance, this festival is more than large enough to generate some buzz. Some of the previous festival artists include; The Chameleon Project, God Made Me Funky, Gym Class Heroes and many more.

Bands are invited to submit themselves for next year’s festival through sonic bids. There are 2 promoters who have been handling all bookings; The Gerbz and Nufunk both of which are more or less focused on urban / electronic music.
