How to Survive as a Rock & Roll Musician in the ’80s

I have had the honor of working with Metalworks as their new WordPress consultant, and while perusing around the president’s old band website TRIUMPH, I came across this great little article he wrote back in the day on what he felt was required for survival as a musician back in the 80s.

I have to say, I think his words apply even today. It all really comes down to musicianship and the right attitude. Even with all the connections in the world, with a poor attitude and poor musicianship you’ll never get anywhere. He goes on to break down into 7 core fundamentals that are the makeup of a “professional musician”.

Note that the article is called “How to survive” not “How to get rich”… if stardom is what you’re after, there is no guarantee… but if all you’re really aspiring to do is be gainfully employed as a musician, there are plenty of avenues one can take to make a very comfortable lifestyle for themselves.

Pick Three – Ben Blackwell

benhorse.jpgBen Blackwell’s business card from Third Man Records lists his job title as Pinball Wizard. He can’t believe he has a legitimate, rent-paying job working almost exclusively with vinyl records. He misses Detroit.

Ben Blackwell from Third Man Records sent me, hands down, the most interesting/disturbing Pick Three photo ever. Kudos to him for that.

Ben Blackwell from Third Man Records will be appearing on the How To Make Money With Vinyl panel on Thursday, March 18 at 12.30 pm.

Here’s his most excellent Pick Three

Hunx and His Punx: I hope this is the show where Hunx finally comes out of the closet.

Human Eye: The best band? My highest recommendation. All others are merely debris in their wake.

Cheap Trick: I wonder if they’ll play the first song off their old album.

That’s it for today’s edition of Pick Three. Please join us again tomorrow when more people say more things about more shows.

Keep up with this shizzle here. I know no one says that anymore. I’m trying to get into Guiness for being the world’s most uncool person ever.

You can follow we twits @sxsw and @mspark.

Don’t tell anyone but I’m sitting here in the cave listening to Triumph, lp

YouTube Treats: Princeton

Princeton is a clever Californian quartet with a sugary, Brit-pop sensibility. Their breezy melodies and smart sampling are undeniably captivating. Princeton’s debut album, Cocoon of Love is catchy and charismatic. Their songs offer a winning balance as they wash over lyrics of contempt and frustration with whimsical orchestrations and soft dance beats. Princeton invites us to drown our sorrows in a soothing sea of hazy melodies.

Princeton demonstrate their child-like charm in their SXSW YouTube Channel video, “Martina and Clive Krantz”. Their music is fluid and magical. They drop samples over traditional instrumentation and add hints of Afro-Caribbean percussion and doo-wop harmonies in a perfect balance. Twin brothers Jesse and Matt Kive have been playing music with childhood friend Ben Usen since the 1990’s, but got serious in 2008 when David Kitz joined the band and they released Bloomsburg, a four-song concept EP about a group of British intellectuals.

Princeton is quickly gaining recognition for their sweet, dream-pop production. They recently toured with Vampire Weekend and Au Revoir Simone. SXSW is happy to have Princeton perform at this year’s music festival. They will be playing at the Karine Showcase at Wave Rooftop on Wednesday, March 17th at 8 pm, register today and we’ll see you there!
