I have had the good fortune of meeting a musician from France with nearly 20 years of experience under his belt, his name is Lawrence Collins. This man is by far the most captivating performer I have seen in ages. He has one of the most dynamic voices I’ve heard in a long time. His lyrics are truly powerful and with the times, with a complimentary narration projected on screen while on stage.

Traditionally video projections are more or less abstract and offer no story line. However, with Lawrence Collins… the visuals alone depict the lyrics word for word. It is therefore possible for a non-english speaking audience member (despite living in France his lyrics are english) to understand the meaning of his lyrics.

What I love most about Lawrence’s lyrics is how unrestricted they are. There’s a song on his album called “Superman Is Dead”, this song makes reference to superman as the president of the united states. When viewing his live show, he plays back images of George Bush highlighting his errors and depicting him as a vampire feeding on the blood of the innocent. It is truly powerful. He doesn’t hold back at all, I’d describe him as a cage rattler providing a refreshing wake-up call.

While watching his show I took notice of the words “Superman is dead” being accented with images of George Bush, but when he sings “Superman is Back” it is accented with an image of Obama. This is the sort of songwriting that has made countless artists famous… it’s by far the most relatable content for the times we are currently facing.

That’s the key after all… can people connect with what you are saying? That’s why love songs have always been best sellers…. not because the quality of the song itself is superior but because love will never expire. People will always fall in and out of love and relate to songs which share a similar experience. To write a song about Facebook may work now, but inevitably it will lose meaning as it gets phased out by the next big social media site.

His song “Another Sky” from his most recent release entitled “Superman is Dead” is another great example. Lawrence has a 5 year old daughter and according to him, his perspective has completely changed with her in his life. He produced a music video in the desert with a heartbreaking story line; our children are inheriting a dying world. The way in which he presents it is magical to say the least!

Imagine if you will the last flower on earth, located in the middle of the desert and you walk past this flower without noticing it’s existence… until you are pushed over the edge of a cliff by a child and fall onto it. Sadly, this seems to be our future. Our children will be inheriting a desert and cleaning up our mess if we do not act now. It brings tears to my eyes when I realize that what he is singing is true. We are shamefully in need of a good smack to snap out of our oblivion.

Without further adieu, I label Lawrence Collins as one of the most inspiring indie artists of our time and I urge you to buy his record “Superman is Dead” to support his efforts in bringing light to our world. After all, superman is not going to save our planet, that is up to us.
