This year’s performances at the 5th annual Canadian Music Café will include Amy Millan, Arkells, The Duhks, Emma-Lee, Hawksley Workman, Jason Bajada, The Mountains and the Trees, Ruby Jean and the Thoughtful Bees, Saukrates, Spiral Beach, Stef Lang, Terri Clark, USS and Winter Gloves. These artists will have the opportunity to showcase their unique sounds to American and Canadian music supervisors and film industry delegates at the 34th Toronto International Film Festival. Live performances run daily at the Hard Rock Cafe, 279 Yonge Street, September 15th – 17th, between 1-5 p.m.

“Once again, we are thrilled at the breadth and depth of Canadian talent that applied to the Café, demonstrating the excitement that Canadian artists have for this event,” said Michael Perlmutter, café coordinator, Canadian Music Café. “We have confirmed 12 music supervisors from the U.S. – the most in the Café’s five-year history.” The attendees will be treated to live performances from a variety of music genres, including rock, pop, dance, hip-hop, country and jazz.

The Café showcases Canada’s vibrant music scene to music supervisors/executives, producers, directors and media from around the world. As the result of international exposure, leading Canadian music companies receive nearly half of their revenues from foreign sources, according to reports from Canadian government sources.

“The Café has provided a platform for over 60 Canadian artists to date,” said Duncan McKie, president and CEO, CIRPA. “We salute this initiative and are pleased to facilitate the dialogue where film and music meet.”

Submissions for the 2009 Canadian Music Café are now open and last year’s event was a real big hit! The showcase is annual in association with the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) and includes 15 Canadian acts performing in front of music supervisors, publishers, producers and directors attenting the TIFF.

Last year’s showcase landed some of the talented artists synchronization deals (licensing their songs) with such tv shows as “Degrassi” and such films as “The Wrestler” just to name a few.

We’ve all learned that careers can be launched with as little as one sync deal in a hit tv show or a box office film in theaters. After last year’s success, guess who decided to get involved… THE RADIO STARMAKER FUND! There lies living proof of how lucrative this opportunity really is. The competition is fierce with more than 300 applicants and only 15 getting selected to perform up to 3 songs.

That being said, don’t miss out on your chance to perform at the Hard Rock Café in front of the delegates whom are attending this year’s Toronto International Film Festival. The event is not open to the public, it is strickly for industry professionals by invitation only.

Best of all, it is not genre specific so you are sure to catch an eclectic taste of what Canadian music really is; Hip Hop, Rock, Folk, Jazz, and so much more.

Check out the 2008 alumni of the Canadian Music Café (CMC) hosted at the Hard Rock Café as part of the Toronto International Film Festival. This video includes a candid interview with program coordinator discussing the goals and process of the CMC and performances by City and Colour, Final Flash, Lindi Ortega, Kreesha Turner, Jill Barber, Shuyler Jansen, Two Hours Traffic, and Grand Analog.

For more information about the CMC please visit http://www.canadianmusiccafe.com
