Billy Talent pumps Olympics crowd
They played NXNE way back when they were called “Pez” – watch here as Billy Talent revs up Vancouver with “Fallen Leaves” earlier this week. Big hockey fans, these boys. Go Canada!
What one voice can do
Watch & listen – and be patient! - as Basia Bulat makes magic with just her stunning voice, handclaps, and her boot heels. The crowd at Toronto record store Soundscapes is silent & spellbound – shades of Mavis Staples, early Janis Joplin. Basia entertained the Texans at NXNE’s barbecue at SXSW 2008.
You want catchy?
Check out the new video “Noisemaker” from NXNE alums Two Hours Traffic. And click here to see how our friends at CHARTAttack deftly segue from some background on the video to some fascinating Jewish religious history…
Congrats to the Shoe’s Craig Laskey!
NXNE congratulates our good friend Craig Laskey on being nominated in the Nightclub Talent Buyer of the Year category at this week’s prestigious Pollstar Concert Industry Awards. Craig’s nomination recognizes decades of great entertainment at The Legendary Horseshoe Tavern. Keep up the great work, Craig!
Elliot Brood rocks @ the Olympics
Festival faves Elliot Brood bringing a little Ontario to a packed LiveCity venue – barricades still intact – at the Vancouver Olympics on Valentine’s Day. Go Canada!
Coeur de Pirate’s “irresistible charm and megawatt smile”

Jack & Meg pas de deux
The latest in genre-bending: the National Ballet of Canada presents Chroma, a ballet set to the White Stripes’ music. Pro Tools – CD Review
Spanning just over 44 minutes “Pro Tools” seems neither too long or short. This is mainly due to the poetic structure of the lyrics and because of this “Pro Tools” is one of those albums where you’ll catch something different on each listen. “Pro Tools” has [...]
BEAT LOUNGE Beat Battle

On Sunday June 21st, 2009 20 local producers from Toronto went head to head in an elimination style Beat Battle tournament as part of The Academy’s 4 days of programming during NXNE 2009 Festival. The excitement levels blasted through the roof as contenders knocked each other out of the ring, fighting for a $500 [...]
North By NorthEast Music Festival 2009

More than 500 bands and 50 venues scattered in downtown Toronto, all accessible with a $30 wrist-band. It’s by far the most affordable way to enjoy a seasonal bar hop in the early summer.
By day, NXNE organizers hosted a conference for film and music at the Holiday Inn on King St just off of Spadina [...]

The Bake Sale – CD Review
Yeah yeah yeah, by now you’ve probably heard of The Cool Kids hailing out of Detroit and Chicago. Since I peeped their EP last summer (which is what’s being reviewed here) & their couple of mix albums I really have [...]
The Flatliners – This Respirator
The Flatliners are back and tighter than ever. We managed to grab an interview with vocalist/guitarist Chris Cresswell and guitarist Scott Brigham back stage at Edgefest ‘08. It’s been a year since we’ve met the boys at NXNE 2007 where they just finished recording their album and signed to Fat Wreck Chords (the youngest group [...]
Hostage Life – White Jesus
Interviewed at Edgefest ‘08, guitarist Patrick Mathers of Hostage Life recounts a story from 2 years ago when Hostage Life played Edgefest in 2005. It’s interesting to remark upon the fact that certain venues expect a certain stage etiquette when a band performs in front of a family audience. For some artists, that goes without [...]
The Vulcan Dub Squad – Die Deif Die
The North by North East music festival presents The Vulcan Dub Squad at Holly Joe’s in Toronto. Their image portrays the look of a 60s rock band like the Beatles, dressed to impress with style and class. Their front man Ranbir Gundu is surely an actor with his casual yet alluring dialogue while captivating the [...]
DJ Champion – NXNE
To the left is Betty Bonifassi from DJ champion. Their performance at The Boat for the North by North East (NXNE) festival in Toronto was amazing. The entire floor from the stage to the back end at the bar was bouncing with everyone jumping along to the music. Sadly, as hype as the crowd [...]
